It’s the ease back, feet up, party down time of the gardening year.
Signaled at Southside Community Land Trust by its annual Hoe-Down Celebration this Saturday afternoon.
Clever, d’avvero?
Not so much, this event, with the digging and the planting and the earnest environmental appeal.
More with the digging in to a barbecue dinner rounded out with vegetables (and I quote here) “grown within shouting distance of the grills”, planting yourself near people who look interesting and laughing a lot as you enjoy yourself listening to music — maybe even dancing — and forget this is a pretty painless fundraiser for SCLT’s education and urban agriculture programs.
OK. If you’re determined to be earnest, there are farm tours and urban agriculture education demonstrations. But knowing SCLT, they’ll be pretty enjoyable anyway, and you won’t be punished for wandering back to the food and Aquidneck Island-grown wines if you’re overwhelmed by a sudden urge to be merry.
Bring the little pagans. There will be activities for them as well.
Tickets, $20 for adults/$15 for students/$5 for children, include dinner and one drink.
Festivities go from 4 to 8 p.m. at Urban Edge Farm in Cranston. Directions and more information on the Web site, of course.
(From here on down I’m just being unfair:)

Hamburgers, Hot Dogs and Veg Burgers (with a choice of homemade Urban Edge Farm Pesto or Cabot Cheeses)
