Birdwatching and birdfeeding are year-round activities. I have blue-jays, cardinals, finches and many varieties of wild birds in my back yard.

I feel it my duty to feed the birds in my back yard. I try to make sure not to let the feeders get down to the empty point when it’s very cold out and especially in the middle of winter.

The information on English Nature, dated 2006, stated “The money spent on food for garden birds has increased by 500% in the last 15 years.” The people at Wild Birds Unlimited, in Warwick, where I bought all my bird seeds for years, told me just last week that the price of the bird seed had skyrocketed. I hope people will still try to keep feeding the beautiful creatures.

Birds supposedly come to the gardens to “feed, breed, nest and rest.” They also seek shelters during the rain and snow. I keep a bird bath, so they could have water to drink, bathe and preen their feathers, but the water would soon become icy as the temperature continues to drop.

I was able to take a few pictures through my glass window today and will soon look forward the old winter scenery.

Funny you should post about feeding birds as this morning I picked up some bird seed as the feeders have been a bit empty! I know blue jays are pushy but they are so pretty aren't they? Thanks for visiting Ledge and Gardens. Please come again!
