Signs of spring in Providence

I know it’s raining right now, but spring is coming.

I have proof.

This morning I went out into my back yard in Providence and saw one snowdrop.

Then, while I was walking to my car, I saw a bee hovering over the damp bricks on the sidewalk.

It was the first time I’d really been out in my back yard in weeks, and judging from the size and state of the greenery of my spring bulbs, it’s time to uncover the beds.

(There’s something about this blog that begs me to unburden myself: I never raked my yard last fall. The leaves took so long to fall, then the snow fall almost immediately and froze them into an unappealing, unrakeable lump. At that point I just locked the door on them, muttering, “Compost yerselves”.)

I put my rosemary out on the porch this morning for some sun and fresh air, which keeps it going until summer.

It’s March.

It’s in the 50s.

I think we just might make it.
