Many hyacinth bulbs planted in my front yard bloom in March and April and I usually bring some indoors as cut flowers.

It has been a long time since I had hyacinths growing indoors. There are 2 white hyacinth bulbs in the planter I received as a holiday gift. It was the same planter that gave me narcissus, then crocus.

Watching the green growth breaking through the soil and seeing the white buds coming through, then a white flower opening up, one by one, in the past week has been a very pleasant experience. The thick leaves did not grow much more, unlike all other hyacinths I was familiar with.

The beauty and fragrance of these white hyacinths graced my house day after day as I watched each flower open up.

I hope the flowers will stay pretty for many days, past Valentine's Day weekend and after all the snow outside has melted away.

Hyacinth belongs in the family Hyacinthaceae, genus hyacinthus, a native of middle Mediterranean region. The Garden, or Common or Dutch hyacinths are cultivated in the Netherlands.

Hyacinth is said to be a symbol of style and elegance. It was the favorite flower of Madame de Pompadour in the mid-18th century, according to the International Bulb Society.
