Magnolia stellata, or Star magnolia, was on the list of my 'must have' flowering trees when I ventured into gardening 21 years ago. I didn't even know then that this tree would produce flowers early, as a young tree. It is one of the earliest bloomers in the spring.

Star magnolia is considered to be a small, trouble-free and slow-growing tree reaches about 15 - 20 ft in height with rounded crown spreading to about 10 -15 ft. at maturity. I have to prune mine every year to keep it compact and not too dense.

The flowers are star-shaped with 12 to 18 thin, delicate, strap-like petals and light fragrance. The blooming period lasts about 2 -3 weeks.

It was dark and cloudy this morning when I stepped outside to take a close look at the first blooms with raindrops from yesterday still present.

I will have several more days to enjoy the beauty of this white star magnolia.

Star Magnolia is also a select tree for any remembrance gardens.
