Star of Bethlehem

There are times, especially in the recent years that I wish I had made a catalog of when and where I bought then planted certain plants or bulbs. I wonder if my Star of Bethlehem came as plants, bulbs or by some other happy stance.

All I know was that I have enjoyed these white, six-pointed, star-flowers for several years, first in the back yard and later I transplanted some to the front yard. They seem to thrive well in all areas, dry or moist, shady or sunny and require no special attention. They can be grown everywhere including cemetery prairies, meadows, banks of streams, drainage ditches and waste areas. I am actually surprised that we do not see them around more often.

Star of Bethlehem or Ornithogalum umbellatum belongs in the Lily family. I have not been able to find out how or when it got the name (or why not Star of David).

Each year I look forward to their making an appearance in my garden.

Yesterday I brought some into my workspace and they are just right for today, Memorial Day and for a national moment of remembrance which is supposed to take place at 3 pm ( any local time ).
