My first poppy opened up about a week ago.

The paper quality of lightness and texture of the oriental poppy (Papaver orientale) is unique. The showy character of poppy flowers is second to none.

The dancers of the garden take the center stage in latter part of May every year.

It's time to recite the poem by A.P.Ropes again.

" The strange bright dancers are in the garden
The wind of summer is a soft music
Scarlet and orange, flaming and golden
The strange bright dancers move to music."

Poppy is a symbol of Remembrance Day (Armistice or Veteran's Day) and also known as Poppy Day when people wear poppies on their lapels.

"In Flanders Field" poem, written by John Alexander McCrae, a physician (1872-1918) has become a part of Remembrance Day ceremony.

The poppies in my backyard are particularly beautiful and so abundant this year. I have several of the salmon pink color in bloom. There are more than 40 blooming flowers, just in the flaming, red color and many buds yet to bloom. A few young new plants from self-seeding are also thriving.

Each poppy bloom does not last very long, but it certainly brightens up any garden while 'it lasts'.
