Diascia -- common name, Twinspur -- is new to me.

According to Proven Winners, The Flying Colors line came to them from the Netherlands with stunning new colors (Appleblossom, Apricot, Coral, Orange, Red and Trailing Antique Rose).

Two weeks ago I picked up 3 small plants from a local nursery which only carried just the orange ones. They were planted in full sun as recommended.

I have been enjoying the blooms, although it remains to be seen if they will have "tremendous flower productions... large flower size... and strong growth habits".

Diascia is also advertised as self-cleaning (deadheading is not required), easy to maintain and able to tolerate cold climate.

Diascia belongs in the Scrophulariaceae family. The common name refers to the two downward-pointing spurs found on the back of the flowers, according to Wikipedia. However, diascia came from Greek words (di = two and askos = bag, pouch or sack). There are 70 species in the genus diascia.

Diascia cultivars, mostly hybrids, have gained popularity in the recent past. I suppose we will be seeing more of them in the years ahead.
