I came across this relatively new flowering annual plant, a native of South Africa, in the spring of 2008. It reminds me of angelonia, a native of South America. Both belong in the Scrophulariaceae family.

Nemesia was voted by the National Home Gardening Club as its favorite plant in 2006 and named plant of the week on February 11, 2007 by momoy.com

The name nemesia comes from the Latin word, Nemesis, the Greek goddess of retributive justice.

I enjoyed nemesia flowers so much last year and was pleasantly surprised that its blooming period extended well into the fall. Nemesia actually prefers cool weather to the usually very hot weather of the summer.

Two weeks ago I happened to find a few nemesias at a nursery in South County. This crop of nemesias has different colors than the ones I had last year. Nevertheless, they are just as beautiful.

Nemesia should be planted in full sun to light shade. Cutting back dead flowers will stimulate new growth and new bloom. Monthly fertilizing with organic fertilizers is recommended.
