This is the fifth season for my ice plant, which started quite small back in June 2005.

I have watched the original plant grow and expand multiple folds. It has since been divided many times.. enough to be replanted on the other side of the front walk and given away to friends.

Each year I can always count on the abundant blooming of iridescent, glistening, magenta-pink, daisy-like flowers. The foliage is succulent. The plant is heat- and drought-tolerant. I have seen them thriving along the highway in southern California, and photographed a group of ice plants along a very dry road in San Diego back in October 2006.

I have seen pictures of the new colors of ice plant hybrids in yellow, salmon pink, orange and lavender; I hope to order some for next year.

Ice plant belongs in the family Aizoacea, with a very interesting history, according to this article by Todd Boland.

Delosperma cooperi was featured as Plant of the Week, May 14, 2004

It is one of my favorite perennial groundcovers that requires virtually no attention or maintenance.
