Everyone knows that Rhododendron blooms in spring. But, today I found several blooming rhododendron flowers in my backyard.
(A Rhododendron festival has been held annually each spring around the 3rd week of May in Florence, Oregon for over 100 years. The last one, the 103rd, was May 21 -23, 2010) .
I am very fond of all my rhododendrons, especially the oldest and largest one in front of the house. Unfortunately the blooming period only lasts about 2 -3 weeks. I usually prune them in the spring after the blooming period.
This past summer I let the incense passion flower vine grow on the rhododendron tree and while waiting for the passion flowers to open up, I happened to spot a couple of rhododendrons in bloom. I photographed the flowers and hardly thought twice about it.
This afternoon I went out to clean up some fallen leaves in the back yard and found the small rhododendron tree with several white flowers and about-to-bloom buds. They are not in clusters like the spring blooming. Nevertheless they are just as lovely and I cut off a few stems to enjoy them indoors.
