Gazania aka African daisy is a native of South Africa and in the Asteraceae family.

I have had gazania in the past and enjoyed them as cut flowers.

Gazania thrives in hot weather and dry soil. I have seen them in places such as southern California but seldom in New England. I would have liked to have them in my garden every year; but since I rarely grow anything from seed, I have to depend on the 'hit or miss' method of finding young plants.

This year I found and planted mixed gazanias in early July. Gazanias required very little care, but I gave them fertilizer and occasional dead-headed.

The flowers close down at night and open up again in the morning.

They are among the flowers I look forward to seeing each morning for their variety of colors and markings.
